Famous for its whisky, the Highlands is also developing a thriving industry in micro gin distilleries and micro breweries. Many distilleries and breweries can be reached by train, with more an extra bus, taxi or ferry journey away.
Not being whisky drinkers, this has been the least easy page for us to write but we hope you find it useful! We love the smell and taste in food, just not to drink.

In the 1970s it was the largest malt distillery in the world.
Transport: 35 - 50 minutes' bus journey from Inverness - see Stagecoach service 37, X37 and Highland Council service 300. Alight at stop 'Tomatin Layby Southbound' on the A9 from which it is around 20 minutes' walk to the visitor centre.
The A9 is a very busy road so carefully cross to the bus stop for the north direction, where there is a path through the woods. Turn left onto the lane and down to the junction where you can pick up the path again which takes you down to the distillery entrance road.
There are major roadworks going on in the area until 2028 so you may find that the pedestrian arrangements differ slightly from the usual.

Transport: 5 minutes' taxi journey from Tain train station. Although distance-wise it is walkable (1.5 miles/2.41 km), you would need to walk along the verge of the very busy A9 with no pavement which we would advise against.

ISLE OF SKYE DISTILLERS, PORTREE
Founded: 2017
Products: Misty Isle gins, vodka and liqueur
Ingredients: Water from the Storr Lochs. Gins use botanicals grown in the distillery garden or hand foraged within ¼ mile of the distillery, and fruit grown in the distillery garden. Liqueur uses honeyberries from the distillery garden and hand forage wild elderflower from Skye.
Tours and tastings: Not currently open to the public for tours, however, gin tastings are available in the shop in the centre of Portree.
Further details: Gin and vodka multiple award winners including silver in the World Gin Awards 2022. Also has a shop in Breakish.
Plans to launch a Spiced Rum and to start whisky production.

Further details: Tiree's first legal distillery since the 1800s (distilling was illegal on the island from 1802 to 1950).
Tyree Gin won gold at the Spirits Business Gin Masters 2022 and Hebridean Pink Gin won silver.
