Forsinard is a unique, remote stop-off point – a small station deep in the heart of The Flow Country. It is a UNESCO world heritage site consisting of the most intact and extensive blanket bog system in the world.
The station building hosts the Forsinard RSPB Reserve Visitor Centre where you can learn all about the history of this fascinating area.
A short walk away is the modern viewing tower (hold on to your hat!) and there are also nature trails of 45 minutes and 2-3 hours. When we visited we were excited to see lots of tiny lizards.

There is nowhere for an evening meal and no shop, so if you are staying take food or have an early tea at the tea room. If you are staying at Forsinard Suites also take food for breakfast.
With remoteness comes beauty but also the need for extra precautions, especially during winter. There is no bus or taxi service and you are 29 miles from the nearest town of Thurso.
If a train doesn't arrive as expected, there is a help point at the station – a box which connects to a member of staff elsewhere.
It is a good idea to have a fully charged phone, though you may not get a signal. In an emergency you may be able to connect to 999 even with no signal.
It is a good idea to carry extra food and water. If you are relying solely on the Tea Room phone ahead to check they are open. It is also advisable to carry extra layers of clothing and essential medication.
